To calculate or not to calculate?

January 10, 2019 By Dan Eiblum

MathSmart TutoringClassrooms are a far reach from what they used to be. Gone are the days of doing sums in one’s head and naturally strengthening one’s mathematical ability. Today, graphing calculators cater to laziness, giving students a simple way to perform instant calculations. This damages children’s arithmetic abilities, giving their brains no reason to work harder. This lack of mental “exercise” can prove detrimental in the long run. What if a child was one day placed into a situation where they needed to perform a calculation without a calculator? Would they be able to do it?

It’s an ongoing debate, with several pros and cons surrounding the topic. While graphing calculators foster greater technical knowledge, are enjoyable to use, and ensure airtight accuracy, these mathematical tools are also responsible for widespread complacency. By using a calculator to complete all of their work, students will never be able to develop their math skills to the level they are completely capable of achieving.

That’s what sets public and private schools apart. While public schools let children use graphing calculators to their heart’s content, their private counterparts ban the use of these calculators. For this reason, private school students are much better at (and more confident in) arithmetic. We’re here to prove that you don’t need to fork out on private school tuition to enjoy the same results.

Reliance on a graphing calculator could be a root cause of low self-esteem and confidence issues. At MathSmart Tutoring, we show children simple yet powerful techniques to perform calculations using nothing else but their own brain – strengthening their faith in their own arithmetic abilities. We hire only the best and brightest tutors for your child’s benefit, all of whom are put to the test by the company’s own founder and president.
